From Our Founder, Jennifer Mayhew, MPH
I grew up in a blue-collar family in Hamilton, Ohio, one of five children and the first in my family to graduate from college. Neither of my parents completed high school, and my grandfather never learned to read or write. Those early experiences taught me resilience and resourcefulness—values that continue to shape my approach to leadership and consulting today.
Determined to create a different path, I worked multiple jobs as a teenager to buy my first car and get to college classes across town. I went on to become the first in my family to earn a degree, graduating from The Ohio State University in International Relations and Middle East Studies. During my studies, I spent time abroad in Beirut, Lebanon, where I was evacuated by U.S. Marines during the 2006 conflict—an experience that gave me perspective on global systems, crisis management, and resilience.
Adventure and endurance have always been part of my story. I’ve thru-hiked the 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail, 1000 miles on the PCT, trekked solo in Patagonia, and hiked the John Muir Trail—journeys that taught me discipline, persistence, and the importance of navigating complexity one step at a time.
Professionally, I found my calling in healthcare and human services. After earning my Master of Public Health at the University of Vermont’s Larner College of Medicine, I led projects and teams across Vermont in hospitals, federally qualified health centers, and nonprofits. My career has included managing multi-million-dollar federal grants, directing recovery centers, building financial and operational systems, and advising organizations on strategy, compliance, and quality improvement.
I am also deeply connected to the Veterans community—my father served, all three of my brothers served, and I am proud to be married to a veteran. My early career at the White River Junction VA Medical Center gave me perspective on how to support veterans and their families, and that commitment continues to guide my work today.
In 2018, I began consulting independently, and by 2020 I founded Vermont Healthcare Consulting, LLC—a woman-owned firm that now supports mission-driven organizations across Vermont and beyond. While healthcare remains a core focus, our services have expanded to include businesses and nonprofits across multiple industries. Whether strengthening operations, ensuring compliance, or building financial resilience, our goal is the same: to help organizations achieve lasting results and stronger systems for the communities they serve.
Along the way, I also became a mother—another role that continually inspires my work to build healthier, more sustainable systems for future generations.
